Collect: O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord, give your people, we pray, the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace.
And so today is the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. There are only three people whose birth Catholics celebrate: Mary, Jesus, and St. John the Baptist.
We celebrate his birth because he is the last of the Prophets. He was the last to proclaim the coming of Jesus. He spent his life doing God’s will, calling the people to repentance in order to prepare for the Lord’s coming.
We must heed his calling as well. We must repent and prepare ourselves for our Lord’s return.
By St. John’s life, the words of salvation were sent to us. We, who are unworthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet, and yet, still graced with the Eucharist.
Let us be more like St. John the Baptist. Let us repent and proclaim the good news. In the wilderness of this life, let us proclaim the Lord. Let us decrease so that He may increase.
