Collect: Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service,
so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint.
And so we are back!
And I am back as well lol.
It is Lent again, the greatest of penitential seasons. Lent, from the Old English, Lencten, meaning Spring, or the official Latin term, Quadragesima, meaning Fortieth.
In the East, it is Great Lent, because in the Eastern calendar they have multiple periods of fasting, and Lent is the greatest one of all.
And they all are preparations for the same thing: Easter.
We are preparing for the reason why Christianity exists in the first place.
The Church exists because Christ is risen!
Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life! ~Paschal Troparion
But how do we prepare for something so incomprehensibly amazing?
That is what Lent is for.
We, who are not worthy, are given this chance to prepare the way for the King of the Universe.
And we prepare through prayer, fasting, and alms-giving.
Prayer, so that we may continue to realize that our will should be according to God’s will and we must ask for his intercession when the Evil One tempts us.
Fasting, to show that we are above the temptations of the flesh, to show that we can overcome our fallen nature.
And Alms-giving, to show our willingness to prepare those around us for our Savior.
But these are not things meant only for Lent.
This is what we should apply to the entirety of our lives. This is the Christian mission.
Because after all, we are dust, and from dust we shall return.
But after that, there is God. After that, is paradise, for those righteous and those who have served others, for “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” ~Matthew 25:40
And so let us prepare.
Have a blessed Lent.
